December 30, 2024 - Last Flight of the Year

The weather was fairly decent -- for late December, mid-40s, light winds -- this Monday so I decided to do one last flight in 2024.

The plane was very light -- 15 gallons or gas, no passenger, no baggage -- and in the cold, dense air with a small headwind positively leapt off the ground.

I headed over to Sparrows Point to check out the progress -- more accurately, the lack of it -- on the Key Bridge.   Not a soul was stirring, not even a mouse.

This patch of real estate used to be covered by the red-rust colored factories of Bethlehem Steel.  Now it is covered by the massive warehouses and distribution centers of Amazon, Fedex, and Under Armour.

Now heading east across the Chesapeake Bay.  Those spotches on the Bay are huge flocks of birds, floating on the water.

Bird Blob.

A single barge-pushing tug was the only boat to be seen on the Bay today.

I wasn't going anywhere; just flew around aimlessly, checking out whatever caught my interest.

I took a look at this private airstrip that came on the market ten or so years ago.  They were asking $1.1 million I think.  It was probably worth it, since it is also on a small creek.  Ah, I didn't have the money and didn't want to move to this fairly remote place.  The runway once was asphalt but nature is reclaiming it.

Nearby is another private turf airstrip.  This one has not one, but two runways, which are perpendicular.

What's the deal with this compound of red and tan buildings?

Another private turf strip in the bend of the Chester River, near Chestertown.

Scoping out a big open area west of Chestertown.  Looking east.

P20Looking west.

This cell phone tower brought back memories of my first flights over the Eastern Shore in the Corben Baby Ace.

Solar-powered, no less.

Near Essex Skypark I passed over Rocky Point Golf Course.  Look at that parking lot!  The golfers are out in force today.
